It’s July, and you know what that means, all the corporations are taking their rainbow flags down and de queer-ifiying their platforms —but not over here baby. Since this platform is queer all day every day, I will be celebrating black queer artists year-round. Which leads me to today’s featured artist, Jason Ford! I’ve known Jason for many years, and they’re not only my good good good GOOD sis, but they are incredibly talented and one of the hardest working people I know. I decided to catch up with Jason for a quick interview where they talk about their upbringing, what got them into drag, and their life during the pandemic.

How do you find your confidence in your work?
Growing up a queer, black man in America is in many ways a blessing and a curse. We are the most creative souls on the planet, but are often very reluctant to share that creativity because of the pressures of the society we live in. I have always been an artist and a performer. I went to an arts high school, and was able to build my confidence on the stage in my youth. That has been one of the biggest gifts because that confidence of performing has never left me.
What has been the highlight of your career?
I've had a lot of great moments. I’ve been featured on several tv shows and movies, I have performed all over the country, but some of my favorite moments have been in my hometown of Washington DC. I performed at Youth Pride Day in Dupont Circle. When I was in high school, I snuck down to it every year, so it was really a full-circle moment for me to take the stage as a featured performer in my 20s. I didn’t have dancers or a crew for my 15-minute set, but I pulled it off! There was so much love and inspiration that day, I was really grateful to be a part of it.

How did you discover drag and how has it changed your life?
I have always loved the idea of putting on a wig, some makeup, and a glittery outfit, and being able to transform into a different persona. It's very empowering to bring together these elements, and become whoever you want: A fierce diva. A glamazon. A superhero.
My first time in full drag was in college. I performed in the largest homecoming event, a talent show, and absolutely annihilated. After that, I just started experimenting with different projects. I’d perform at random events near school. When I lived in DC, I was a staple at a club called Cobalt. KHYISHA (my drag persona) was born there.
“Drag has allowed me to tap into my creativity and express myself in ways that I can’t normally do.”

I can say, do, or be whatever on stage, and there is so much power and authenticity in that.
What was your life before the pandemic, what do you miss?
I miss my friends and the little bit of a social life that I had!! Honestly, life was pretty crazy. You don’t realize how fast your life is moving until it comes to a complete stop. For many years, my life was always-on-the-go. Constantly doing everything. Go to work, go to events, go to auditions, go to meetings, go to industry parties, there was always something going on. I was doing my best coping with the organized chaos that my life had become over the past several years.
What is your plans after the pandemic?
I am extremely grateful that the pandemic allowed everyone to take time off. I definitely needed it! For me, I’ve been able to really recharge and recalibrate. I’ve learned to say no. I’ve been taking online classes and working on small projects. I can’t wait to perform on stage again in front of a live audience. I’d love to put on a full show, and tell my story that way. I have a lot to say :)
