Before Elvis, The Beatles, or The Rolling Stones, there was Little Richard. As a black queer person, Little Richard was a huge inspiration for me. He was fearless and unapologetic with who he was before there was any language to define it. He was an inventor and he changed the rooms he was in by being true to who he was. Here are some of my favorite moments from the archives of the man who first taught me to be proud of my queerness. Check it out below.
Little Richard on Letterman, May 4, 1982
“I believe a lot of people wanted to look like how I looked but they didn’t know how to put it on.”
Little Richard Interview KPIX San Francisco, 1984
“I started wearing eyelashes because that was my only way out, in Georgia I was a threat.”
"Tutti Frutti" for the 1956 film “The Girl Can’t Help It”.
Little Richard Late Night Line Up, August 1972
“I love to put it on, I like to shine, in fact I think everybody supposed to do there own thing.”
